‪Cartagena, Colombia

‪If during your southern Caribbean cruise, you plan on doing a city-tour this is the place to do it. Cartagena’s beautiful architecture is only complemented by its rich history. Surrounded by Las Murallas (the wall), the Old Town is a must-see with its plazas, churches, cobblestone streets and colonial buildings. Wandering around is the best way to take it all in.

Other highlights include, the 16th century Convent and Church of San Pedro Claver and the Inquisition Palace.

Inquisition PalaceInside the Inquisition Palace there are poignant exhibits about the inquisition. Some of the torture devices were bone chilling!

This is where people accused of committing crimes against the Catholic Church or witchcraft, were imprisoned and tortured.

The Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is one of the most important fortresses built in the 17th century by the Spanish military. The fort is located on the Hill of San Lázaro, which offers greats views of the city and the Caribbean Sea. If your time permits, a tour of the tunnels will only enhance your visit.

During our limited time in port we had time to visit all these landmarks. If on the other hand you’re interested in purchasing Colombia’s famous gem, the emerald, leather goods or handicrafts it’s possible to do so here.

Of course, going to the beach is always an option. ‬
