St. George’s, Grenada

‪This lush island is located in the southern Caribbean Sea and a large part of its territory is composed of mountains. It’s also known as  “Spice Island” for its large production of spices, especially nutmeg. Further, it’s also renowned for its production of mouthwatering chocolate.

Our cruise ship docked in St. George’s, which made it easy to go explore the town on our own. Many of the highlights are located within walking distance from the cruise port.

The best way to explore this charming town is to simply wander around its narrow alleyways. Stopping along the way at some of the enticing specialty shops. We bought some delicious passion fruit and mango tropical tea as well as a supply of local nutmeg.

Climbing to the top of Fort George is well worth the effort if only to enjoy the beautiful panoramic view the harbor and St. Georges. Alternatively, there is a tourist train for those who would prefer.

Another interesting viewpoint is from Fort Frederick, located up the hill on the outskirts of the city. From there we got spectacular vistas of St. George’s, the harbor and of both the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean.

Grenada has a lot more to offer and I recommend taking an island tour before visiting St. George’s. Go on a shore excursion or simply hire a taxi driver. After your tour, visit the town, which is only a stone’s throw from the cruise port.

We opted to go with one of the taxi drivers that were waiting on the pier for cruise ship passengers. He gave us an excellent tour. Our first stop, 8 miles (13 km) away, was Grand Etang National Park and Forest Reserve. This is where you’ll find a 13-acre lake nestled inside an ancient volcanic crater. It’s located at an altitude of 1900-feet (580 meters) above sea level.

He then took us to Annandale Waterfalls where cliff divers leaped from the top into the water basin below the 50-feet (15 meters) falls.

On the way we witnessed the disasters left behind by Hurricane Ivan which devastated the island only a few months before our visit. People we’re still fixing their homes, but  in spite of everything they welcomed us with a smile.

Lovely beaches are scattered around the island and Grand Anse Beach is probably the easiest to get to from the cruise port. Grenada has also excellent scuba diving with lively reefs and many interesting wrecks as well as the Molinere  Underwater Sculptures Park.
