Tortola is the main island of the BVI, and our cruise ship was conveniently docked in Road Town, the capital, and located near all the attractions. The city’s main areas include Wickham’s Cay, Main Street and Ferry Dock and all are within walking distance from the ship. And many activities can be found around Wickham’s Cay.
The Main Street area is the perfect place to go if shopping or sampling local delicacies are on your mind. It’s also where some of Road Town’s historical buildings can be found including St. Georges Anglican Church, the Post office, the Britannic Hall. To learn more about the Virgin Islands’ culture visit the Folk Museum.
During our time in port we had plenty of time to take an island tour. This is ideal to capture the beauty of this island and enjoy the spectacular view from above.
Of course, just hanging out on the beach, snorkeling or scuba diving are all great choices. If you would like to visit another island while in port and if your time permits, it’s possible to take a ferry to one of the other islands at Ferry Dock.
Note: In September 2017, Hurricane Irma caused significant damage to the island.
