This lovely park is located in the Tampa Bay Area and makes for a delightful place to relax and chill out. For us this was the perfect spot to stop for lunch and stretch our legs as we made our way up the coast to Tarpon Springs from Miami.
The Beaches
The white sand beach on the Gulf side is superb with calm water for all to enjoy. There are a few other beaches including a dog beach and one for fishing. The latter overlooks the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay and makes for a great photo op.
The Fort
The park is named after the vestiges of the Fort De Soto Batteries and Military Post. The fort dates back to 1898. It was built to increase the costal defense during the Spanish American War and is now a Florida Heritage Site. Although many of the rooms were empty, it was still enjoyable to walk around and see the many canons and guard posts. Make sure to walk up to the overlook for great views. We would love to see some of the missing signs replaced and more of the empty space used for exhibitions like the photo gallery.
The Birds
Amateur ornithologists will be thrilled to spot and observe the many birds around the park.
On top of the obelisk-like tower there was a bald eagle’s nest. Sadly there seemed to be some rubbish incorporated in it…
I wish people picked up their trash, as littering is harmful to the environment and wildlife. It’s also unsightly!
The Amenities
The park is well equipped. There was a fishing pier that seemed pretty popular with a bait shop next to it. Trails, kayak and canoe rentals, concessions, grills, picnic areas, showers, restrooms, ample parking, a boat ramp, camping and even a dog park were all available.
Our time was short but enjoyable and we would go again! We certainly recommend it for people passing through or in the area.
