Diving the M/V Castor, Home of the Goliath Groupers

We visited the M/V Castor recently as word was getting around that there were between 40 and 60 Goliath Groupers spawning in this area, which has been known to be a favorite hangout of these magnificent beasts. We were excited about heading out but a little nervous as we’d also heard that this was a […]

Treasure Hunting off the Dania Pier and Cleanup

Unable to resist the temptation of diving another pier in Florida, we signed up with Divers Cove for the Dania Pier Cleanup effort. It’s usually illegal to dive within 100 meters off Florida’s piers, for the good reason that fishermen frequent these and the threat of entanglement or being hooked is very real! Once a year, the […]

Diving the Rapa Nui off Deerfield Beach

Just east of the Deerfield Pier lays the wreck of a 150 ft barge that was sunk carrying replicas of numerous Easter Island sculptures made by a local Boca Raton artist named Dennis MacDonald. Funded by the local Deerfield Beach Women’s Club, the sculptures were loaded onto the barge, which was sunk with the intention of […]

Volunteer Diving with Rescue a Reef

Today was the day! We finally got to join Rescue a Reef on one of their coral restoration outings with Paradise Divers out of Key Biscayne. We had been in touch with Rescue a Reef for what seemed like forever, but with weather problems and travel conflicts it never worked out for us – until today! Whoo Hoo! […]

Diving for Marine Life, a Cleanup Effort and a World Record

Last Saturday we participated in our first underwater cleanup effort – diving Deerfield’s Beach Pier to remove mono-filament line, hooks, lead sinkers and whatever other debris we found in order to protect aquatic life. Turtles, fish and other marine life can get hurt, or worse die, from entanglement in discarded fishing line.

Diving the United Caribbean and the Importance of Maintaining Your Scuba Gear

We made it out with Dixie Divers to the United Caribbean and the Honeycomb Reef again. At first we were disappointed as we had dove this wreck before, but when we arrived at the planned dive site of the Sea Emperor, there was another boat tied up and we had a big group (28!) and needed our […]

Diving the United Caribbean off Pompano Beach

Waters are gradually warming up here in South Florida, and the winds are finally calming down. This past Saturday Apr 1, 2017 we went out with Dixie Divers from Pompano to visit the United Caribbean Wreck. The United Caribbean is a 147-foot cargo ship, which was sunk in August of 2000 as part of Florida’s […]

Diving Captain Slate’s Creature Feature

Is an Eel capable of recognizing and even befriending a human diver? Today we dove the creature feature with Captain Slate and we must say that our impression is a definite yes.

Wintertime Diving in South Florida

Some mornings I feel like the weather is laughing at us as the winds pick-up and the seas get choppy. Especially when a North East wind appears, boating conditions deteriorate and our dive excursions get cancelled. Of course one must think of safety first and anyone that has tried to get on a boat ladder […]

Post Hurricane Diving – Hunting for Treasure

Hurricanes have a way to mess with people’s travel plans. They also stir-up the ocean floor hindering visibility for scuba divers. On the upside, they can also unearth buried treasure, shifting around wrecks and moving sand around at the oceans bottom perhaps exposing long lost treasures for someone to find. Not long ago, some divers found […]
