When we lived in Austin, Houston was a convenient cruise port for us. It was easy to get to. No need to plan extra time in case of flight delays, we could just drive to it.
There is ample and reasonably priced parking next to the cruise ship terminal.
However, there’s no need to show up early, as there really isn’t much to do within walking distance of the cruise port. All you see are oil refineries, so show up once boarding has commenced and enjoy getting settled into the ship.
If you’re flying in, arrive at least one day early before your cruise in case of flights delays or cancellations and take the opportunity to go visit the Houston Space Center. It’s really interesting to see.
As we left the harbor, we had some concerns about NOT taking the $10/week car cover as we saw literally thousands of sea gulls around the ship. Fortunately, the car didn’t look too bad on our return!
We also found that two days at sea before reaching our first port was quite long. We would have preferred to stop in Costa Maya on our way to Roatan, but that option wasn’t available with the cruise from Houston. However, Costa Maya was part of the cruise itinerary from New Orleans.
