Located in Tavernier, the sanctuary shelters over a hundred wild birds including hawks, owls, pelicans, and many more. We love to visit and make a small donation to help keep the sanctuary going. What we love is the way each bird has a small explanation of how it was found, why it cannot be released […]

Last Sunday we went to go take part in SOS’s beach cleanup in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. More than a beach cleanup, this was an informative day with kiosks and tables setup by a number of local environmental causes and organizations including sea turtles, sharks, rescue a reef, and even some local dive shops.
Unable to resist the temptation of diving another pier in Florida, we signed up with Divers Cove for the Dania Pier Cleanup effort. It’s usually illegal to dive within 100 meters off Florida’s piers, for the good reason that fishermen frequent these and the threat of entanglement or being hooked is very real! Once a year, the […]
Witnessing a Baby Sea Turtle Release
We had a wonderful opportunity to witness a baby turtle release with some students and volunteers from NSU (Nova Southeastern University). This was a sold out event put on by the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program to promote awareness about sea turtles.
Today was the day! We finally got to join Rescue a Reef on one of their coral restoration outings with Paradise Divers out of Key Biscayne. We had been in touch with Rescue a Reef for what seemed like forever, but with weather problems and travel conflicts it never worked out for us – until today! Whoo Hoo! […]
Last Saturday we participated in our first underwater cleanup effort – diving Deerfield’s Beach Pier to remove mono-filament line, hooks, lead sinkers and whatever other debris we found in order to protect aquatic life. Turtles, fish and other marine life can get hurt, or worse die, from entanglement in discarded fishing line.
Located in Coconut Creek, north of Fort Lauderdale, Butterfly World has been around since 1988 and it’s the first butterfly house in the US and the largest in the world! It encompasses 3 acres and houses botanical gardens and a working butterfly farm, and a couple of aviaries.
Meet Stoked On Salt (SOS)
Stoked on Salt founder Lisa Miceli-Capano grew up in Fort Lauderdale and according to her bio on her website was just disheartened with all the damage caused to the reefs and her ocean backyard over the years.
We met an enthusiastic and dedicated individual at the Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo, Aubree Zenone, who was an excellent ambassador for the department as well as our oceans and reefs. She gave us all kinds of information very relevant to coral reef preservation and conservation. A topic that is close to our hearts.
We attended the Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo this Saturday. It’s a yearly event held at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale and focuses on all kinds of water related activities. Free diving and spear fishing were most prominent but the show had a host of exhibitors with the latest gadgets, lionfish hunting, some […]
